Is the minimum salary of a NBA too much

When considering the NBA lockout, and asking if the players are making too much, if you look at the minimum salary for a player that is coming in as a rookie, and has never stepped foot in an NBA game, in 2010-2011 season, the minimum salary was $475,000. This was an increase of 8% from 2008-2009 season, where the salary was $442,000. So, as the owners are looking to decrease these numbers, players might be asking for a bit much, especially the rookies, who have never played in a game. And, it’s not only the rookies, but the veteran stars, with a minimum of 10 plus years in the league, are earning $1,352,181 per year, as of last season (even if they are injured, and aren’t playing.)

So, when looking at the lockout, wondering what can be done and where cuts can be made, the obvious answer is in player salaries. Of course there are the players that are going to make the millions, because fans want to see them on the court, and they are bringing fans into the arena, and championships to their NBA team. But, for the rookies, or older veteran players that are not stepping foot on the court, these are the major concerns for owners, especially those who are attempting to bring down the minimum salary per year, which is determined by how long a player has [...]

The New Look Nuggets

You would be hard pressed to find another team out there like the 2010-11 Denver Nuggets. Typically when players lose a franchise player then said franchise kicks the bucket quite fast. Most experts thought that the Denver Nuggets would end up trading Carmelo Anthony mid season, though most didn’t think that Anthony would take as long as he did to approve a trade, as he eventually did to the Knicks.
The New Look Nuggets
And while the Nuggets weren’t too bad when Anthony was on the team, the Nuggets have arguably become a better team after Anthony left. Maybe the players felt the weight of the world off of their shoulders when he left, who knows. Regardless, the Nuggets have gone 6-2 since the trade and currently sit in fifth place in the wild, wild Western Conference.

While the Nuggets will eventually miss Anthony’s scoring, players like Nene Hilario and Ty Lawson have been picking up some of the slack. And since the Nuggets game play was developed with points in mind (they are 1st in Points Per Game and 22nd in Points Allowed), they are going to need all of the points that they can get.

So what kind of damage could the Nuggets do in the playoffs? It depends

Cavs host the Pacers and look to keep their winning ways

Within the previous 5 seasons, the Pacers lagged versus the Cavaliers, particularly at Quicken Loans Arena away from home. Even so, Cleveland will attempt to avoid their lengthiest home losing skid in almost 8 many years Saturday evening once they matchup against Indiana for the first time this season.

Cavs host the Pacers and look to keep their winning ways

The Pacers (3-4) have dropped sixteen of 19 to Cleveland dating back to December. 23rd, 2005, & had dropped ten consecutive in the Quicken Loans Arena stadium right up until a 116-113 triumph April 9th. Indiana may have a high probability for an additional victory in their return to the Cavaliers because Indiana will not need to face Lebron, that has put in 29.4 points in his previous sixteen games versus them, however he now plays for Miami. Rather, Indiana is going to take on a Cavaliers club that has [...]

Nets vs. Magic NBA preview

When the New Jersey Nets take on the Orlando Magic it will be a clash of middle of the road teams both hungry to get a winning streak started in earnest. This is one of those pivotal early season match ups that both teams need to take as seriously as a championship game.

Nets vs. Magic NBA preview

The Nets are probably the better team, but by watching them you couldn’t tell. Their defense is leaky, and their offense is inconsistent. That being said they are capable of exploding at a given moment, and can do some serious damage. Now if they could only keep that kind of killer instinct going for a full game they would be better than 2-2. Coming off of a two game losing streak New Jersey really needs this game to bring some respect to the Garden State team. Standing in their way is an Orlando team that suffers many of the same difficulties.

The Orlando Magic sit at 2-1 and have a lot to prove. This is not a team that goes small. Both of their wins have blown away competition by 29, and 42 points respectively. In their single loss this season, they were kicked around by the power team of Miami. Both of their wins have also come against the Timber wolves, and the Wizards.

Those two franchises are deep in rebuilding mode, and are not projected to be much of a serious threat to anybody. For a team that was a preseason pick for a play off run it looks like Orlando may languish near the middle of the pack, good enough to beat most teams, but not quite good enough to compete with the truly elite squads in the NBA.

One of the biggest worries about New Jersey comes from their loss to the Bobcats which look to be one of the worst teams in the league through the first part of the season. The Nets simply can’t seem to put everything together on a consistent enough basis to be a threat, especially to a team like Orlando which specializes in beating on cans.

October 16 2010 Portland Vs Golden State Warriors Recap

Each team had several injured players that did not make the game including Marcus Camby (right hip contusion), Gregg Oden (knee), Joel Pryzbilla (knee), and Jeff Pendergraph, Camby’s backup, with a season ending knee injury.

LaMarcus Aldridge lead the Trailblazers with twenty five points to a seemingly effortless victory. Five of Portland’s players scored over 14 points in the game including Aldridge, Nicolas Batum (19 points), Andre Miller (15 points), Rudy Fernandez (14 points), and Armon Johnson (14 points). The Trailblazers shot 53.8% from the field while the Warriors only shot fifty percent. Portland managed to hit 52.9% of three point attempts in comparison to Golden State’s 38.9%. Game leaders for the Trailblazers include Aldridge with twenty five points, Lee with eleven rebounds, Roy and Fernandez both with five assists, Batum took the steal department with three, and Alderidge with two blocks. For Golden State, Lee and Curry tied the points lead both with seventeen, Curry had eleven assists, Ellis and Lee tied with two steals, and a three way tie with one block between Radmanovic, B. Wright, and D. Wright.

The game pushed to Portland’s advantage quickly with a 14 – 4 lead in the first five minutes of the game. At the end of the first quarter Portland was leading 34 to 29. The second quarter did not look any better for the Golden State Warriors as their opponents shot 73.7% from the field. The half ended with the Warriors trailing by sixteen. The second half the Portland lead by as much as twenty one points. The Warriors finally appeared in the game with about four minutes remaining in the third quarter with an 18 – 3 run. The Warriors outscored Portland in the third quarter by a score of 32 to 23. The scoring streak did not affect the Trailblazers as they won the exhibition 118 to 105. Portland’s 118 points created a record high for points scored during a preseasons game. This second straight loss for the Golden State Warriors moved them to a 2-2 record, the same as the Portland Trailblazers record.

Chicago Bulls vs Dallas Mavericks (Thursday, October 7th)

Don’t anyone tell Dirk Nowitzki the pre-season doesn’t count. The 7-foot power forward, who quietly signed a contract extension to remain in Dallas earlier this summer, was nearly perfect from the free throw line, scoring 30 points and pulling down ten rebounds for the night. His shooting percentage from the field for the thirty-plus minutes on the floor wasn’t spectacular – he connected on only nine of his 21 shot attempts – and he only made one of his three attempted three-pointers, but he was a beast on the glass and got ten rebounds in total.

Caron Butler was the other high scorer for the Mavericks, connecting on six of thirteen shots and on nine of ten free throw attempts. Butler was the only player to play more minutes than Nowitzki, as Jason Kidd got into early foul trouble and had a quiet night. Jason Terry was the third Maverick to shoot well from the floor and have double-digit scoring, including one three-pointer late in the third quarter. Derrick Rose played thirty minutes for the Bulls and scored seventeen points. Joakim Noah scored thirteen points in twenty minutes. One of the reported main pieces in an alleged trade that would have sent All-Star Carmelo Anthony to the New Jersey Nets, Noah signed a contract extension with Chicago over the weekend and, in last night’s game, proceeded to show why they shouldn’t have considered letting him go. The center had eight rebounds, six assists and three steals, and can defend the basket as well as anyone in the league. Utah transplant Kyle Korver did well in his second game in Chicago’s system, scoring ten points on three-for-eight shooting and staying perfect from the free throw line. Carlos Boozer, Chicago’s biggest free agent addition this summer, is out with an injury before the preseason even started, his broken hand relegating him to rehab for at least two months.

Chicago had the most fast break points (nine) and won the battle of points in the paint (28-20), but Dallas won the battle of the boards, pulling down 18 offensive rebounds to Chicago’s eight. Carlos Boozer will have to wait a few months to play alongside his new team in their quest to battle for playoff position in the East. Preseason or no preseason, if his numbers are any indication, Dirk Nowitzki is ready to take his team to battle in the West now.

The Suns will most likely not make it deep in the 2011 playoffs!

The Phoenix Suns have been one of the most exciting NBA teams to watch since 2004 when they adopted the Run-and-Gun offense. They have not been known for playing much defense, but they sure know how to score! Steve Nash is the perfect point guard to run this style of fast-paced offense, he can see everything happening on the floor and always seems to get the ball exactly where it needs to be.

It is not known yet if the Phoenix Suns will continue to operate under the run and gun style offense now that their former superstar, Amare Stoudemire has joined the New York Knicks. Amare has been as much the face of this organization throughout this decade as Steve Nash. With changing of personnel, it is possible that the style of play will change as well. It is not likely that the Suns will repeat their playoff performance from last season, where they lost to the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals, but they will be a competitive force in the West based on pure talent.

The Suns are in a very tough division and will most likely not be able to top the Lakers for the top spot of the Pacific. They will also probably not be the highest scoring team in the NBA without their powerforward, Stoudemire, working hard on the boards and running the floor. The Suns replaced Amare with athletic swingman Hakim Warrick, who is still unproven, but who may flourish playing with a great point guard like Nash.

Basketball. It’s Come a Long Way, Baby!

When Dr. James Naismith nailed a peach basket onto the wall of a YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts in 119 years ago, he could have never imagined what his newly invented game of “basketball” would become. The first game of basketball had a final score of 1-0 The winning shot had to be poked out of the basket with a stick in order to continue play in that game, so future games would be played with a net shaped like a basket, so the ball could fall through easily.

Today, basketball is played and enjoyed by millions of kids, college athletes, professional athletes, and fans.

The National Basketball Association, (NBA), was formed on June 6, 1946 and currently hold 30 teams in 29 U.S. cities and one Canadian city.

What Luxury Tax Means To Teams

The idea behind the luxury tax is to serve as a mechanism to help control spending by professional sports teams. Basketball, football, soccer, lacrosse and several minor leagues in various sports have a salary cap to serve the purpose of a luxury tax. Major league baseball, on the other hand, has a luxury tax instead of a salary cap.

So, how does it work? In an arrangement that all major league baseball teams abide by, when a teams total payroll goes over a certain amount (the exact amount will vary by season) that team is taxed on the amount they go over. This luxury tax is then paid to the league. The league then puts these funds into an industry growth fund.
